<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa officially launched South Africa&rsquo;s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system at OR Tambo International Airport on 12 August 2026. The digital system allows eligible travellers to apply online without visiting a South African mission or visa-processing centre, while using biometric verification, identity management and risk assessment to improve both the efficiency and security of immigration processes. The system was initially introduced in four strategic source markets and is intended to expand to additional countries and other immigration services.</p>

<p>The City of Johannesburg and City Power settled R5.25 billion in outstanding electricity debt owed to Eskom following an intervention and mediation process established by the Minister of Electricity and Energy. The settlement resolved long-running billing disputes and was accompanied by commitments from Eskom and City Power to cooperate on infrastructure maintenance, reducing electricity losses and data-sharing to support the long-term security of electricity supply.</p>

<p>Government of South Africa reported progress on an infrastructure pipeline comprising 81 Strategic Integrated Projects and 263 individual projects with an estimated combined value of R1.9888 trillion. Of these, 37 projects worth approximately R69 billion had been completed, while 82 projects valued at about R502.7 billion were under construction. Government is also supporting project preparation and investment through Infrastructure South Africa.</p>

<p>In July 2026, the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) announced that more than 40,000 informal and micro businesses had been registered on the DSBD Connect System. The digital platform is designed to support the registration and formalisation of small businesses and spaza shops, improve access to government support and funding opportunities, and facilitate partnerships for business development. The Department also indicated that it is working with SALGA and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) to implement the registration programme and expand the number of registered businesses.</p>

<p>In May 2026, the government approved R179.6 million under the Spaza Shop Support Fund to support South African-owned spaza shops across all nine provinces. The programme, implemented by the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency and the National Empowerment Fund, approved support for 2,369 businesses, including 1,316 applications valued at R79.6 million through SEDFA and 1,053 enterprises valued at R99.9 million through the NEF. The Fund provides financial and business development support, including stock purchases, infrastructure upgrades, and business training, while promoting the participation of women-, youth-, and disability-owned enterprises.</p>
