Eastern Cape Operation Shanela crackdown results in more than 1,100 arrests

The South African Police Service conducted high-density Operation Shanela operations across the Eastern Cape, resulting in the arrest of more than 1,100 suspects and the recovery of 42 unlicensed firearms. The operations included visibility patrols, roadblocks, stop-and-search operations and vehicle checkpoints aimed at disrupting criminal networks and combating serious and violent crime.

Cabinet approves General (Mining) Laws Amendment Bill to combat illicit mining

Cabinet approved the publication of the General (Mining) Laws Amendment Bill, 2026 for public comment. The Bill seeks to strengthen the legislative framework for combating illicit mining and related activities by amending the Criminal Procedure Act, Diamonds Act, Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and Precious Metals Act. The proposed amendments include measures to criminalise illicit mining and related offences.
